Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary – Shelter to the Endangered

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, also known locally as Thekkady, is an example of nature’s bounty, with nice scenic charm, made bio diversity and providing veritable traveler satisfaction. Sprawling over a section of 925 square kilometers, Periyar is one among the twenty seven tiger reserves in the continent of Asia. Zealously guarded and expeditiously managed category two national park is known to be a repository of rare, endemic and vulnerable flora and fauna and forms the foremost watershed of Kerala.

Where it is situated

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected space within the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in Kerala. It’s set high within the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats on the border with province state. The park is found four kilometer from Kumily, around a hundred kilometer east of Kottayam, a hundred and ten kilometers west of Madurai and one hundred twenty kilometer southeast of Kochi. The Periyar lies within the middle of a mountainous space of the Cardamom Hills within the north and therefore the east it’s finite by mountain ridges of over 700 m altitude and toward the west it expands into a 200 meters high tableland.

How to reach Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is easily accessible to first timers who want to pay a visit to the place. By air there are three airports near the park namely Cochin International Airport about 190 kilometers away, Thiruvanthapuram International Airport about 267 kilometers away and Madurai about 140 kilometers away. By rail one can get to either of these stations namely Kottayam, Changanassery, Ernakulam and Madurai. As far as roadways are concerned there are direct bus links to Madurai and Cochin.

Best time to visit Periyar

The months of March and May represent the driest seasons of the year, attributable to that the animals spend most of their time close to the lake within the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Even the tigers are also noticed approaching the waters within the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Animals are also seen from motorboats on the lake or from watchtowers found out within the Periyar Tiger Reserve. June, July and August constitute the monsoon season. The park is at its best throughout this period as far as greenery is concerned and one will be able to relish the showers of monsoon.

The tourism department has taken well care of the lodging facilities of the tourists visiting the park. It has taken the initiatives to build many beautiful cottages and huts in the forest areas for those who are interested in enjoying nature`s company to the fullest. Also there are many resorts and hotels in the nearby places where one can stay and visit the park.

Which animals to watch for at Periyar

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to a large variety of birds and animals. It is the home of many animals like Tiger, Elephant, Toddy Cat, Malabar Giant Squirrel and many birds. During winter season one could see even the birds of north that migrated there for a soothing warm weather. These animals are the full moon of the sanctuary, simply increasing its beauty!
