Dalhousie is situated in Western heights on outer slopes of Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas. It is in lap of district Chamba of Himachal Pradesh. This place is blessed by nature & at a height of 6000 to 9000 feet above sea level. Dalhousie was developed by British Empire in 1854. Although the peak time to visit Dalhousie is in summer season but it is a favorite among honeymoon couples during winter also. Dalhousie is structured on & around 5 hills namely Tehra, Bakrota, Balun, Kathlog & Patreyn. Dalhousie has got its name from 19th century British governor General, Lord Dalhousie.

This place is an archive of Ancient Hindu culture & tradition. Dalhousie shows an image of art & handicraft of mid 6th century. One can also enjoy the spectacular snow-covered Dhauladhar mountains from are also visible form Dalhousie Himachal. There are more than 600 hotels in Dalhousie.

The distance from Delhi to Dalhousie by road is 590 Kilometers & same from Chamba to Dalhousie is 52 kilometers. It takes approx. 12 Hours to reach Delhi to Dalhousie by road. The nearest railway station for Dalhousie is Pathankot. Pathankot is at a distance of 80 Kilometers from Dalhousie. It takes approx. 2 hours to reach Dalhousie from Pathankot. Taxi & buses are easily available at Pathankot railway station for Dalhousie. Although it is not advisable to visit Dalhousie by air, because the nearest airport is at Gaggal in kangra district is 135 kilometers from Dalhousie. It takes approx. 4 hours to reach Dalhousie from Gaggal. Buses & taxis are also available on Gaggal airport.

The temperature varies a lot during summer & winter. In winter you will need heavy woolens to save yourself from weather when mercury drops below freezing temperature. In summer the weather is very pleasant & you need light cotton clothes.

Different travel companies offer attractive travel packages also for Dalhousie. The best package will be for 3 to 4 nights. As there is nothing more to see here for 3 to 4 days are enough. You can choose package according to your budget which varies from 20,000 to 70,000.

When you are going by road from Delhi to Dalhousie the best route will be through Ambala. If you start in the morning you can enjoy your lunch at Karnal. There are many road side restaurants which offer good quality hygienic food on this way.  During your journey you will pass through Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar & Pathankot.

One main point of attraction in Dalhousie is Gandhi Chowk which is at intersection of 8 roads which lead to Subhash Chowk, Upper Bakrota, Banikhet, Motitibba,  Panchpula, Sadar Bazar, Diankund & Khajjiar.

The main places to visit in Dalhousie are Khajjia, Bharmour, Kalatop, Manimahesh, Chatrari, Lakshmi-Narayan group of temples, Mani Mahesh Temple and Lake, Karelanu, St. Patrick’s Church, Bakrota Hills & Dainkund Peak which we will be discussing in coming posts.

Dalhousie is one of the most beautiful & picturesque hill stations in Himachal Pradesh. It offers all modern facilities in lap of nature. It is an ideal place for any vacation or honeymoon. Dalhousie is the heart of Chamba valley & its slammer too.
