Whenever I think of Delhi to Shimla Trip, picturesque valleys and amazing deep pine forests came in to my visuals. Delhi Shimla journey is an experience of a lifetime; whether it is by Train, Flight or by Road.
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, is located in Shivalik Hills in North-West Himalayas at a height of 2130 metres above sea level. Eye catching valley views, Deodar trees, deep Oak, Pine and Rhododendron forest adds more stars to the panoramic beauty of Shimla. Delhi to Shimla distance is 360 km and can be completed by all means of transport.
Shimla by Road: Shimla is well connected to road from all major cities via NH 1 and NH 22. From Delhi you will pass by Sonepat, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, and Ambala on National Highway 1. From Ambala you must to go through by Zirakpur, Kalka, Parwanoo, Solan, Shoghi and lastly Shmla via National Highway 22.
From Parwanoo hilly stretch of the area begins. It’s about 85 km hill climbing. The roads are exceptionally good other than the small stretch from Zirakpur to Kalka. You’ll find a deadly combination of foods on the entire trip. Whether it be Paranthas of Murthal Sonepat, Makke ki Roti of Zhilmil Dhabha at Karnal or various food joints on both side of road along the hilly stretch, one can’t afford to miss these foodie’s delight.
There are many options to travel by road. You can get Deluxe Volvo Buses from Delhi to Shimla and even Taxi, Private DLY Taxi, Roadways Buses, Luxury 2 x 2 buses are readily available or you can travel by your own car. The best is to travel by your own car.
One can never get bored on this trip. The cool windy breeze coming from the hills, picturesque natural beauty, delightful food joints and cosy weather will make your journey an everlasting memorable one.
Shimla by Air: Jubberhatti Airport is the nearest one to Shimla, about 26 km away at 5000 feet above the sea level. It is a small airport and has no ground lighting facilities, foggy weather round the year. Jagson and Kingfisher Airlines are well connected from Delhi to Shimla and Kullu Airport. Another nearest airport is Chandigarh which is well connected to all major cities in India.
Getting Shimla by Train: There are no direct trains from Delhi to Shimla. This journey is in two parts. You can catch up with many Trains from Delhi to Kalka and then take a connecting train from Kalka to Shimla. Hilly area starts from Kalka and hence there are narrow gauge rail track here. Either you can take a Kalka – Shimla Heritage Toy Train or a Rail Car. This train trip takes 6 hours to take you to Shimla, while by road it takes only two and a half hour. Rail car takes 2 hour less in comparison to toy train. Stoppage times at the stations are too small, just 2 to 3 minutes. There are currently 102 tunnels on this rail track. This toy train is always a honeymooners’ paradise.
One can enjoy lovely surroundings, lush green valleys, cold breeze, fragrance of fresh dew, clings to the steep cliffs and majestic glory of British period bridges during the journey.
